Easy Horse Puppet Craft for Kids
If your kids love pretend play, storytelling, or simple paper crafts, this cute horse puppet craft will be a hit.
It’s easy to make, uses basic supplies, and encourages lots of imaginative play afterward.
You can use it during farm-themed lessons, puppet shows, or story time.
And since the horse is one of the 12 zodiac animals, this little puppet also works nicely as a Chinese New Year craft during the Year of the Horse (2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse).
Let’s get started!

Materials Needed:
- Brown and beige papers (we used Origami sheets of size 15cm x 15 cm)
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Craft stick (popsicle stick)
- Googly eye (optional but cute!)
Step-by-Step Instructions for the Horse Puppet Craft
Step 1: Prepare your supplies

In this image, you can see all the materials spread out – two shades of paper, scissors, glue, your pencil, and a craft stick. Once these are ready, you can get started quickly.
Step 2: Draw the horse outline

On the beige paper, draw a simple horse head and neck shape with a pencil. Keep the drawing rounded and soft so it’s easy for kids to cut.
Step 3: Cut out the horse shape

Using scissors, carefully cut along the outline.
You’ll end up with a clean horse silhouette that forms the base of your puppet.
Step 4: Mark where the mane will go

Add two small pencil lines at the top of the head. These marks show where the mane will be attached.
Make a small slit along those marks.
Using your scissors, gently snip along the pencil marks. This creates a tiny flap.
Now, lift and fold that flap slightly forward. This gives the mane a more dimensional look.
Step 5: Cut out mane strips

On the brown paper, cut long, thin strips. We used Origami sheets of size 15cm x 15cm here.
These will form your horse’s mane. You can make as many as you like depending on how full you want it to look.
Step 6: Begin attaching the mane

Add glue to either edge of the base of the folded flap and place the first strip on top.
Press gently to secure.
Step 7: Add more mane pieces

Glue additional strips one by one.
Kids can place them at different angles to make the mane look lively.
Step 8: Trim the mane

Once all strips are attached, trim the ends. Kids can cut them shorter, angled, or layered – it’s completely up to them!
Here we have kept only the upper portion of the mane and cut the rest off, because we are going to add more strips to the lower portion(along the neck part).
Step 9: Add more mane strips

Here we continue building the mane.
First, lift the small flap on top of the horse’s head and glue a strip underneath it. Then start adding longer brown strips along the top and down the neck area.
Keep gluing the strips in a row so the mane looks fuller and flows down one side of the horse.

Add a little glue near the horse’s ear and continue attaching the remaining brown strips along the top of the head.
Once all the strips are glued, the mane fans out nicely on one side of the horse.
Step 10: Trim the mane again

Now that we have glued all parts of the mane, it’s time to shape it further.
Cut off the upper portion fully above the ear, except for the first three strips we glued. And then shape the lower portion.
Cut the strips shorter or angle the ends so the mane looks neat and even. Keep trimming until you get the length and style you like.
Step 11: Draw the facial features

Using a brown pencil or crayon, draw a gentle smile and a small nostril. Add shading along the nose or cheek area if you’d like.
And stick on a googly eye.
If you don’t have one, simply draw an eye with a marker.
Step 12: Attach the craft stick

Flip the horse over and glue a craft stick to the back. Let it dry for a minute or two.
And your horse puppet is ready!

In the final photo, you can see how adorable the finished project looks.
Kids can now use their stick puppet for pretend play, storytelling, puppet shows, or Chinese New Year-themed activities.
Here are some ways to use this craft:
Farm Theme
Turn this horse puppet into part of a whole farm set. Kids can make a cow, sheep, pig, and chicken using the same basic method. Add a popsicle stick to each one and you instantly have characters for farm songs, circle time, or pretend play.
Chinese New Year (Year of the Horse)
If you want to use this craft for Chinese New Year, simply switch up the colors or add festive touches. Red and gold paper strips make a beautiful, celebratory mane. You can also glue a tiny red paper tassel under the ear for a traditional look. It’s an easy way to include zodiac animals in your celebration.
Storytelling Puppet
Pair the horse with your child’s favorite books. Kids can retell stories or make up their own as the puppet “trots” along. This is especially fun for early readers who enjoy acting out scenes.
Classroom Activity
In a group setting, each child can design their own horse. Some might give it long hair, some might use markers instead of paper strips, and others may add patterns. When everyone is finished, let them put on a quick puppet parade.
Color and Pattern Play
Instead of brown cardstock, try rainbow paper, patterned scraps, or even gift wrap. Kids love choosing colors that match their personality. You can also use yarn, ribbon, or felt for the mane if you want more texture.
Conclusion
This simple horse puppet craft is such a joy to make and play with.
Kids love adding the mane and giving that realistic touch to the horse, and grownups love how quickly the project comes together.
